The Buzz on Electric Trucks at Peterbilt Motors Company

Peterbilt Motors Company is leading the charge on electric trucks.

As electric vehicles charge into the market, there are a lot of questions to be answered. We want to talk more about the electric vehicle lineup at Peterbilt so you can make an informed decision on the best choice for your business. The Peterbilt lineup includes three electric vehicle configurations for city delivery, refuse, and regional haul applications – the Model 220EV, Model 520EV and Model 579EV.

Model 220EV

The Model 220EV is Peterbilt’s first electric configuration for medium duty applications. The 220EV provides environmentally conscious customers a zero emissions vehicle for clean, efficient operation and lower overall maintenance.

The Model 220EV features Dana’s Spicer® Electrified™ e-propulsion system and is equipped with two battery packs and an on-board charger. The 220EV features a range between 100 and 200 miles. Using the vehicle’s DC fast-charging system, the state-of-the-art, high-energy density battery packs can recharge in about an hour, making the 220EV ideal for local pickup and delivery, as well as short regional haul operations. Designed for driver comfort and productivity, the Model 220EV features enhanced visibility, superior maneuverability, a spacious interior and ease of serviceability for maximum uptime.

Technical Highlights:

  • GVWR: 26,000 – 33,000 lbs.
  • Continuous Power Rating: Up to 154kW
  • Battery Recharge Time: 1 hour (with DC fast charging)
  • 67 mph Top Speed

Model 520EV

The Model 520EV is ideal for commercial and residential refuse applications. It can pick up to 900 residential trash bins on a single charge! This truck takes advantage of the frequent stops and starts of a typical refuse route to generate electricity via regenerative braking. This technology transfers energy back into the battery packs and reduces the amount of brake pedal pressure required, providing energy efficiency and a smooth, quiet ride.

Technical Highlights:

  • GVWR: 67,500 lbs.
  • Motor Power Rating: 370 – 500kW
  • Battery Recharge Time: 1 hours (with DC fast charging)
  • Estimated Operating Range: 60 – 90 miles

Model 579EV

Last, and certainly not least, is the electric version of the Peterbilt 579. The Model 579EV provides environmentally conscious customers with a zero-emissions, high-performance, Class 8 truck for clean and efficient operation and lower overall maintenance. It is perfect for short and regional hauls, as well as port operations. The 579EV features a battery-electric drive system that uses the energy stored in large packs of lithium-ion batteries to meet propulsion and other power requirements. Target applications are predictable routes, food & beverage, last mile delivery, and of course as mentioned above, drayage or port operations.

Technical Highlights:

  • GVWR: 54,000 lbs. GCWR: 80,000 lbs.
  • Motor Power Rating: Up to 450HP Peak and 1600 lb.-ft. Torque - 370–500kW
  • Battery Recharge Time: DC - 1.5 – 5 hours/AC – 11 - 13 hours
  • Estimated Operating Range: 100 – 200 miles
  • Regenerative Braking (Braking charges batteries)

Low volume production will begin in late 2020 for the Model 220EV and Model 579EV, with the Model 520EV in 2021. Reach out to the TLG Peterbilt team to learn more about the Peterbilt electric lineup or to request a quote.
